Do this first: shut off the water
Close the nearest fixture valve
Toilets, sinks and most appliances have a small valve on the supply line. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
If that fails, close the main
The main shutoff is usually where the water line enters the home, in the garage or on an exterior wall. Some homes also have a valve at the meter box near the street, which may need a meter key.
Turn off the water heater if it's leaking
Electric: switch off its breaker. Gas: turn the control to Off or Pilot. Then close the cold-water valve on top of the tank.
Keep away from electricity
Don't stand in water near outlets, appliances or a breaker panel. If water is reaching electrical equipment, leave the area and call your utility or 911.

Read the full checklist for before the plumber arrives.
What counts as a plumbing emergency
- A burst or actively leaking pipe you can't stop
- A main shutoff or fixture valve that won't close
- Sewage backing up into a tub, shower or floor drain
- A water heater leaking from the tank, or the smell of gas near a gas water heater (leave and call the gas utility first)
- Water coming through a ceiling or into a light fixture
- A toilet overflowing that you can't stop
- No water at all to the home, after you've confirmed with your utility
A slow drip, a running toilet or a disposal that hums can usually wait for a scheduled visit. If you're not sure, call and we'll tell you.
How we handle an emergency call
A person answers. We ask what failed, whether the water is off and whether anyone is at the property. We then tell you honestly when a licensed plumber can be there. We won't promise a time we can't meet. If we can't get there quickly enough, we'll say so, so you can decide what to do.
When the plumber arrives, the first job is to stop the water and make the home safe. You then get a written estimate for the repair before any further work is done, as with every Uniform job.
Emergency repairs we handle
- Leaking and burst pipes
- Overflows and failed shutoff valves
- Sewer backups
- Leaking water heaters
- Overflowing toilets
- Leaks under slabs and in walls
What we don't do
We're plumbers. Water extraction, drying and mold remediation are done by restoration companies, and we'll tell you when you need one. Gas leaks are a gas utility and fire department emergency first.
Frequently asked questions
Are you open 24 hours?
Call 856-UNIFORM any time. We'll tell you exactly when a plumber can arrive. We don't advertise round-the-clock dispatch unless a plumber is actually available to come.
Do emergency calls cost more?
Calls outside normal hours or that need an immediate dispatch can cost more. We'll tell you before we send anyone, and the repair itself is still quoted in writing first.
Where is my main water shutoff?
Usually in the garage, on an outside wall where the line enters the house, or in a utility closet. Condo units often have a shutoff in the unit and another controlled by the building. Find it before you need it.
Should I call my insurance company?
If water has damaged the home, call your insurer early and take photos before cleanup. We'll provide a written description of the cause and the repair.
Water still moving? Call now.
Shut off the water at the fixture or the main, then call. We'll tell you when a licensed, background-checked plumber can be there.
